We subscribe to the high speed internet connection from Comcast. It costs us about $50, for 6MB downstream speed, and 1.5MB upstream speed. There is a 250GB limit for the total bandwidth. I would love to see speed increases for this package, but it is very decent. We are maximizing the value of this package by utilizing our internet connection to the fullest in the following ways.
We do most of shopping online except for groceries, clothes, and smaller items. Shopping online means we save on gas. We also save on 6% sales tax. AND, it is highly convenient.
Because we shop online, we have subscribed to the Amazon Prime membership currently costing us $39/yr (regularly $79). With Amazon Prime, we get free 2-day shipping. Also, return shipping is free. If we don't like something we bought, we simply return the product with free return shipping.
Another benefit of Amazon Prime is their free Prime Instant Videos. Amazon has a very extensive library of TV shows and Movies -- 25,000 titles + counting. In the beginning of the year, we canceled our cable TV subscription as it was getting expensive and we weren't watching the channels they offered. So, we need to to feel that entertainment void, and Amazon Prime Instant Videos has come to the rescue. We are now much more happier to watch commercial free TV. We had to buy Roku XS device ($85 refurbished) to make this happen as our TV isn't internet connected. Join Amazon Prime - Watch Over 40,000 Movies.
We use MagicJack for phone calls. With just $14/year (with 5 year service), in my opinion, this is the biggest money-saver service. This coupled with Tracfone has saved us over $1800 in the last 3 years alone and counting. See my blog post How to Save Money on Cell Phone Bill.
Another thing we did was that we bought our own cable modem ($79 when we bought it) rather than renting one from the cable company. This itself has saved us $7/month or $84/year, which pays off our Amazon Prime membership.
Hope these tips help you. If you have your own tips you would love to share, please feel free to comment.
