Natural Light Solar Attic Fan Review

Our attic was getting extremely hot during the Georgia summer months. So, I knew we needed a better way to circulate air in the attic. One of the ways to do so is to install an attic fan.

The function of an attic fan is to improve attic air circulation resulting in a healthy, energy-efficient home. Attic fan pulls hot air and moisture out of your attic and extends the life of a roof. In summer months, it keeps the attic cooler and in winter months, it prevents moisture build-up and ice damming. In short, a well ventilated attic reduces cooling and heating costs.

When our roof came up for replacement, we decided to get an attic fan. During the roof replacement negotiation process, our roofer offered to install a powered (electric) fan for free. But, the catch was that I had to bring in an electrician to hook up wires to the fan. This would have costed me about $300 just for electrician's cost, plus another $100 for the electric fan.

After a bit of research, I found Natural Light's Solar Attic Fan. The 30-Watt unit costed me $415 on Amazon. I also purchased optional $15 thermostat that prevents the fan from running on a sunny (but cold) winter day. Finally, I paid $18 for shipping and handling as this was not a prime-eligible product. The total cost came up for about $450.

This fan is available in 4 solar panel sizes: 10, 20, 30 or 50 watts. Below is cubic-foot per minute capacity for each of the solar panel sizes offered by Natural Light.

10 watt: up to 850 cfms (1200 sf)
20 watt: up to 1275 cfms (2000 sf)
30 watt: up to 1550 cfms (2500 sf)
50 watt: up to 1900 cfms (3100 sf)

Our house has about 1200 square foot of attic space and a 10 watt unit would have been sufficient according manufacturer guidelines.

But, after installing 30 watt model, I am glad I got high-capacity unit as I am not very sure if 10 or 20 watt units would have been sufficient. Probably, manufacturer's guidelines work when your house is new and all soffit vents work properly. But, for an older house like mine, vents need proper suction. Also, the roofer told me to get as high cfm fan as possible. According to the roofer's own words, "you can't go wrong with a high capacity unit".

I am very impressed with this product. It is so quiet in operation that you can't really hear it. One of complaints about electric attic fans is that they are very noisy because of 60 Hz AC motor. But, a DC motor that comes with solar-powered products is extremely quiet and doesn't vibrate at all creating no noise.

Natural Light's Solar Attic Fan is very sturdy. It is guaranteed to withstand hurricane forced winds in Florida weather. This fan comes with a 25 year manufacturer's product warrantee.

Overall, Natural Light's Solar Attic Fan offers solid engineering and construction, an unobtrusive low-profile, a powerful enough solar panel, and a great warranty. After a month of living with the fan, I am completely satisfied and unhesitatingly recommend it.
